Glossary

Short, checkable definitions for terms used across the tools and guides.

CC0
A Creative Commons dedication that waives copyright to the extent possible, allowing reuse without conditions.
CDR
CorelDRAW’s proprietary native format. It cannot be created by open tools, so Heartline Works offers it only when a real file exists. Guide
Density
Mass per unit volume, usually g/cm³. It links the volume of a model to its weight in a given metal. Tool: Metal Density Calculator Guide
Duplicate path
Two identical paths stacked on top of each other, which makes a laser cut the same line twice. Guide
DXF
Drawing Exchange Format: a CAD interchange format widely accepted by laser and CNC software. Guide
Fineness
Purity expressed in parts per thousand: 750 fineness means 75% pure metal. Tool: Karat & Purity Calculator Guide
Karat (K)
A measure of gold purity in 24ths by weight. 24K is nominally pure; 18K is 18/24 = 75% gold. Tool: Karat & Purity Calculator Guide
Kerf
The width of material removed by a cutting process such as a laser beam or a router bit. Guide
Lost-wax casting
A process in which a wax or resin pattern is invested in plaster, burned out, and the cavity is filled with molten metal. Tool: Casting Weight Calculator Guide
Making charge
The fee a jeweller adds for labour and overhead, charged per gram, as a percentage, or as a flat amount. Tool: Jewelry Metal Value Calculator Guide
Mid-market rate
A reference exchange rate between buy and sell rates. Banks and transfer services add a margin to it. Tool: Currency Converter Guide
Node
A point on a vector path where segments join. The number of nodes is one measure of a design’s complexity.
Open path
A path whose end does not meet its start. Fine for engraving lines; usually a problem for closed cut shapes. Guide
Pennyweight (dwt)
A troy unit equal to 1/20 of a troy ounce (1.55517384 g). Tool: Weight & Unit Converter Guide
Public domain
Works whose copyright has expired or never applied. Rules vary by country, so the source’s statement is recorded.
Reference metal value
The value of a piece’s metal content at the spot price. It excludes premiums, making charges, wastage and tax. Tool: Gold Value Calculator Guide
Spot price
The benchmark price for immediate delivery of one troy ounce of a metal, quoted in US dollars. Tool: Gold Price Calculator Guide
Sprue
The channel through which molten metal flows into a casting mould. Its metal is part of the pour weight. Tool: Casting Weight Calculator Guide
SVG
Scalable Vector Graphics: an open XML-based vector format that keeps curves as curves. Guide
Tola
A traditional South Asian unit of mass used for gold and silver. This site uses 11.6638038 g (3/8 of a troy ounce). Tool: Weight & Unit Converter Guide
Tracing
Converting a raster image to vector paths. It is an interpretation of the pixels, so traced designs are flagged and reviewed.
Troy ounce
The unit used for quoting precious metals: exactly 31.1034768 grams. Tool: Weight & Unit Converter Guide
Vector graphic
An image defined by paths and curves rather than pixels, so it scales without losing sharpness. Guide
Wastage
An allowance for metal lost during making, usually a percentage of the item’s weight. Tool: Jewelry Metal Value Calculator Guide
