What this tool does

Calculates the reference value of an amount of gold from its weight, purity and the current spot price, and shows how much pure gold the piece contains.

When to use it

Use it to size up scrap, coins, bars or jewelry by metal content, or to compare a quote against the reference value of the gold in it.

What each input means

Gold weight
Total weight of the item, in any listed unit.
Gold purity
Karat or custom fineness. A 22K item is 91.67% gold by weight.
Currency
Currency for the result.

Formula and method

  • Pure gold (g) = weight (g) × purity factor
  • Value = pure gold (g) × (spot per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768) × exchange rate

Worked example

Illustration with round numbers (not a current price): pure gold at 100.00 USD per gram.

  1. Weight 10 g, 22K → pure gold = 10 × 22 ÷ 24 = 9.1667 g
  2. Value = 9.1667 × 100 = 916.67 USD

≈ 916.67 USD reference value

Limitations

  • Reference value only: dealers pay less than spot for scrap and charge more than spot for new items.
  • Stones and non-gold parts must be excluded from the weight you enter.
  • Hallmark purity can vary slightly from the nominal karat.

Data sources, update times and handling of stale data are described in the calculator methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this different from my local jeweller’s rate?
This tool shows a reference value from the international spot price. Local rates add dealer premiums, import costs, taxes, making charges and association rates, and they follow local supply and demand. Treat the result as a baseline for comparison, not a price you will be quoted.
How much pure gold is in 22K?
22 ÷ 24 = 91.67% by weight, so a 10 g piece of 22K gold contains about 9.17 g of pure gold.
Does the weight include stones?
No — weigh or subtract the stones first, because only the metal is valued here.
