What this tool does
Solves the density relationship for whichever quantity you do not know — weight, volume or density — with a list of typical metal densities.
When to use it
Use it to estimate the weight of a modelled part, work out a sample’s volume, or find an unknown alloy’s density.
What each input means
- Volume
- cm³ equals millilitres. A water-displacement measurement gives cm³ directly.
- Density
- Mass per unit volume in g/cm³.
Formula and method
- Density = weight ÷ volume
- Weight = volume × density
- Volume = weight ÷ density
Worked example
Weight of 2 cm³ of pure gold:
- Density of pure gold ≈ 19.32 g/cm³
- Weight = 2 × 19.32 = 38.64 g
38.64 g
Limitations
- Density values are typical; check your alloy’s datasheet.
- Porous castings weigh less than solid volume suggests.
Frequently asked questions
What is metal density?
Mass per unit volume. Gold is about 19.3 g/cm³ — roughly 19 times as heavy as the same volume of water.
