What this tool does
Estimates the weight of a plain jewelry component from its dimensions and metal.
When to use it
Use it to cost a simple ring band, a length of wire or sheet, a tube or a bead before making it.
What each input means
- Shape
- Choose the shape closest to the piece. For complex pieces use the volume from your CAD model.
- Dimensions
- Entered in millimetres.
Formula and method
- Volume (mm³) is computed from the shape formula, then converted to cm³ (÷ 1000).
- Weight = volume (cm³) × density (g/cm³) × quantity
- Ring band: π × ((inner/2 + thickness)² − (inner/2)²) × width
Worked example
A flat band: 17 mm inner diameter, 4 mm wide, 1.5 mm thick, in 18K gold (≈15.5 g/cm³):
- Volume = π × (10² − 8.5²) × 4 = 348.7 mm³ = 0.3487 cm³
- Weight = 0.3487 × 15.5 = 5.41 g
Calculated estimate ≈ 5.41 g
Limitations
- Calculated estimate — real shapes (domed, tapered, textured) differ from the plain forms used here.
- Stones and settings are not modelled.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for a ring with a domed profile?
It will over- or under-estimate. For shaped profiles, take the volume from your CAD software and use the Casting Weight Calculator.
