What this tool does

Builds an indicative price for a piece of jewelry from the reference metal value plus any wastage, making charge and tax you enter — each as its own line so you can see what drives the total.

When to use it

Use it to sanity-check a jeweller’s quote or to prepare your own costing.

What each input means

Jewelry weight
Weight of the metal only — exclude stones.
Wastage %
Extra metal added for loss during manufacture, charged at the same per-gram price.
Making charge
Labour charged per gram, as a percentage of metal value, or as a flat amount.
Tax %
Applied to the subtotal.

Formula and method

  • Metal value = weight × purity × reference price per gram
  • Wastage value = weight × wastage % × price per gram at the purity
  • Total = (metal + wastage + making) × (1 + tax %)

Worked example

Illustration with round numbers (not a current price): pure gold at 100.00 USD per gram.

  1. 10 g of 18K: metal = 10 × 0.75 × 100 = 750
  2. Wastage 10% = 1 g × 0.75 × 100 = 75
  3. Making 5 per gram = 50
  4. Subtotal = 875; tax 10% = 87.50

Indicative total ≈ 962.50 USD

Limitations

  • Indicative figure — not a dealer or local-market price.
  • Wastage and making-charge practice differs by market and jeweller.
  • Stone value is not included.

Data sources, update times and handling of stale data are described in the calculator methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this different from my local jeweller’s rate?
This tool shows a reference value from the international spot price. Local rates add dealer premiums, import costs, taxes, making charges and association rates, and they follow local supply and demand. Treat the result as a baseline for comparison, not a price you will be quoted.
What is wastage?
Metal lost or added as allowance during manufacturing. Conventions vary, so confirm how your jeweller applies it.
