In much of South Asia and the Middle East gold is traded by the tola, while international prices are quoted per troy ounce. Converting between them is simple once the unit definitions are fixed.

Some local markets round the tola to 11.664 g or 11.66 g. The difference is about 0.003% to 0.03%, which matters little for a single piece but shows up when comparing large lots across sources.

Converting a price

  1. Take the price of one gram of pure gold (spot per ounce ÷ 31.1034768).
  2. Multiply by the purity factor (karat ÷ 24).
  3. Multiply by the number of grams in the unit you want, such as 11.6638038 for a tola.

Buying by weight: what to watch

  • Confirm the unit and the purity the quote refers to — “per tola” of 24K and of 22K differ by about 8%.
  • Ask whether the price includes making charges, wastage and tax.
  • Weigh the metal only; stones and enamel are not gold.
