What this tool does
Converts the silver spot price into a price per gram, 10 grams, tola, troy ounce and kilogram for 999, 958, 925, 900 or 800 fineness silver.
When to use it
Use it to compare silver quotes or price sterling jewelry and bullion by metal content.
What each input means
- Silver purity
- Fineness in parts per thousand: 999 fine silver, 925 sterling, 900 coin silver, 800.
- Currency
- Currency for the result.
Formula and method
- Price per gram (pure) = spot per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768
- Price per unit = price per gram × (fineness ÷ 1000) × exchange rate × grams in the unit
Worked example
Illustration with round numbers (not a current price): pure silver at 1.00 USD per gram.
- Sterling (925) factor = 0.925
- Per 100 g = 1.00 × 0.925 × 100 = 92.50 USD
≈ 92.50 USD per 100 g of sterling silver
Limitations
- Reference price only — retail silver includes premiums, fabrication and taxes.
- Plated or filled items are not solid silver and should not be valued this way.
Data sources, update times and handling of stale data are described in the calculator methodology.
Frequently asked questions
Why is this different from my local jeweller’s rate?
This tool shows a reference value from the international spot price. Local rates add dealer premiums, import costs, taxes, making charges and association rates, and they follow local supply and demand. Treat the result as a baseline for comparison, not a price you will be quoted.
What does 925 mean on silver?
The piece is 92.5% silver by weight (sterling). The rest is usually copper.
