What this tool does
Calculates the reference value of silver from its weight, fineness and the current silver spot price.
When to use it
Use it to estimate the metal content value of sterling items, coins and bars.
What each input means
- Silver weight
- Weight of the item in any listed unit.
- Silver purity
- Fineness in parts per thousand.
Formula and method
- Pure silver (g) = weight × fineness ÷ 1000
- Value = pure silver (g) × (spot ÷ 31.1034768) × exchange rate
Worked example
Illustration with round numbers (not a current price): pure silver at 1.00 USD per gram.
- Weight 250 g at 925 → pure silver = 250 × 0.925 = 231.25 g
- Value = 231.25 × 1.00 = 231.25 USD
≈ 231.25 USD reference value
Limitations
- Reference value only; resale value is lower than spot.
- Weight must exclude stones, plating bases and non-silver parts.
Data sources, update times and handling of stale data are described in the calculator methodology.
Frequently asked questions
Why is this different from my local jeweller’s rate?
This tool shows a reference value from the international spot price. Local rates add dealer premiums, import costs, taxes, making charges and association rates, and they follow local supply and demand. Treat the result as a baseline for comparison, not a price you will be quoted.
