Open Paths and Duplicate Lines in Laser Files

Two geometry faults account for a large share of laser-file problems: paths that do not close, and lines drawn twice.

Open paths

A path is open when it ends at a different point from where it started. A closed outline cuts out a shape; an open one may leave a gap or be ignored by software that fills or nests only closed shapes.

Duplicate lines

Two paths with identical geometry stacked on top of each other make the laser cut the same line twice. That adds time, widens the cut, and can scorch the material.

Finding them

  • Zoom into corners where outlines meet.
  • Use your editor’s “combine/weld” and “remove duplicate” functions.
  • Run the file through the validation tool, which counts open and duplicate paths.

Frequently asked questions

Are open paths always wrong?
No. Open paths are correct for engraving lines or scoring; they are a problem only when you meant to cut a closed shape.
